COMMITTEE ON POLITICAL EDUCATION (COPE)

SEIU, local 1991 supports the belief that political action is every member’s responsibility. To be a resident of Miami-dade county or Broward county and a union member and avoid political involvement is a failure of our responsibility to citizenship and puts at risk our success as a Union entity.

Jackson is a public health trust and as such, some of the elected commissioners serve on the Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible, among many other responsibilities, for authorizing the budget and ratifying or rejecting the union contracts subsequent to bargaining.

Employee activism, as it applies to efforts to support and elect commissioners, electing and supporting state and federal leaders as well as the president of the United States is critical to maintaining good contracts and enacting laws that support a quality health care workplace for the present and future.

The Union has a Committee on Political Education, (COPE) which is charged with informing, mobilizing and educating Jackson Memorial Hospital employees about the current political environment and related issues.

The challenges for the SEIU, Local 1991 Committee on Political Education (COPE) include but are not limited to: passing legislation that supports quality health care, and legislation which protects our jobs and improves wages. In addition we need to support and elect politicians who make health care workers and their issues a priority, which includes maintaining the right to organizing workers and achieving good labor contracts.
