The Steward Role: The Steward is a volunteer worker activist who works with the Local Union to administer the terms of the Labor contract on behalf of their fellow workers. Stewards are either elected or volunteer in the absence of competition. The Steward is a Union member who is loyal to the Local Union, the Local Union leadership and the membership. The Steward assists the Local Union to insure that the duty of fair representation to the member is met. The Steward investigates work place issues, if necessary, through the dispute resolution process outlined in the labor contract. This is done with the guidance and assistance of the Local Union staff and leadership. The Steward is responsible for maintaining confidential documentation on each members issue. The Steward is instrumental in educating and managing the expectations of Union members, advocating for members in meetings, presentations and grievances. The Steward is an organizer, educator, communicator, mediator, political activist and a worksite leader. The Steward is most effective when they have the full support of Union members. The Steward is an important and formidable part of the representation team.
