Let the Commission Hear from JMH
on August 17, 2-5 pm

Miami-Dade Commission Chamber
111 NW 1st. Street, Miami, 2nd Floor

(Take the Metrorail to the Government Center Stop)

The Miami-Dade Commission Committee which oversees JMH will consider three key issues which affect our contract, our union, and the welfare of our patients are up for debate.

*  Jackson's Part of County Budget -  Miami Dade County has seen an 18% increase in its revenue from real property taxes in this year alone.  There will never be a better time to establish a fairer funding formula for JMH -  one which includes payment for added responsibilities shifted from the county budget to JMH over the years and which  reflects honestly the maintenance of county fiscal effort which voters were promised when they approved the ½ cent sales tax for JMH.

*  Health Care Taskforce – Commission Chair Joe Martinez has proposed a  task force to examine ways of extending health care access to the more than 500, 000 uninsured in Miami-Dade County,  100,000 of whom are children. We strongly support this, both because of its basic justice  and to stop the flood of uninsured charity cases which JMH treats every year.  The Chairman has proposed appointing Martha Baker, RN, our president, along with other  important community leaders, including Marvin O'Quinn, to serve on the taskforce.  Chairman Marinez  asked our union to support his effort for healthcare in the August 17 meeting!

*  JMH's request to purchase land at Jackson South – This land is needed to build a patient tower to attract more paying customers to JMH. Changing the balance between paying and non-paying patients is a critical part of plans to put JMH on sound financial footing.

We have many friends on the commission who are fighting for health care and for JMH. We need to mobilize to show the commission and the community that Jackson's RNs, Physicians, and Professionals stand with them for our hospital, our patients and our professions.

EVERYONE SHOULD DO THEIR BEST TO COME AUGUST 17

There are many ways to join in this effort:

  • Meet in front of the Alamo to take the Metro with other JMH workers at 1:15 pm, or,
  • Meet in the lobby of the County Building, inside the security stations at 1:30 pm – parking lots available on NW 3rd Street & on NW 2nd Ave. between NW 1st St. & Flagler St., or,
  • Meet in front of the Alamo after shift change at 3:30 to take metro for the end of the commission mtg., or,
  • Come on your own and join the members in scrubs in the commission chamber any time during the meeting.
