New Strength Unity Plan:
Build Strength Through Membership Unity
Increase member involvement by creating and implementing a Leadership Development Program to educate and support our elected leaders and member activists in their work to build the Union.
Develop a local diversity plan to ensure that all members have the opportunity to participate in our Union.

Encourage members to participate in the SEIU RN Flight Team to strengthen our voice nationally and build leadership skills.
Enhance and support active Steward Councils to increase our voice and power in member representation in the workplace.

Expand representation staff from 1 per 2500 members to 1 per 1000 members with staff focus on strong member advocacy, issue resolution, steward and leader mentoring, committee support and grievance processing.
Develop new member orientation program.
Support SEIU identity with common national logo and purple as our color.
Increase coordination Among SEIU Local Unions
Work with SEIU 1227 (West Palm Beach) and SEIU 1199 FL (Florida nursing homes) to develop and coordinate joint strategies for organizing and political action.
Develop joint application for Unity Fund support from the International.
Greater Accountability to Each Other
Publish an annual report for members identifying the Local’s progress and achievements under the New Strength Unity Plan.
Coordinate communication and bargaining goals between our hospitals to speak with one voice and set local standards for caregivers.
Keep Members Connected Using New (and Old) Technology
Resume regular newsletters.
Hold meetings in units and satellites.
Conduct Chapter meetings (Jackson Memorial and St. Mary’s) as needed.
Obtain and utilize members’ email addresses.
Establish regular email connection.
Establish and maintain Local 1991 Website.
Maintain Bulletin Boards.
Periodic Union Tables at hospitals.
Hold Politicians Accountable
Improve accuracy of lists and ability to connect members to the public officials who should be representing them.

Develop an active Local Member Political Organizer program to harness the energy and power of members for effective political work.
Increase COPE participation and programs supporting candidates.
Work with international on advancing priorities through Congress.
Work with SEIU state council effectively to advance issues of concern to members and their families.

Develop an active state legislative program to include: needlestick legislation, nurse staffing legislation, legislation to make the right to organize unions a reality in Florida, special risk retirement status in Florida Retirement System for Public Health Trust members, expanding the coverage for healthcare until all children and eventually all who live in Florida are covered.
Work in Jobs with Justice and other community coalitions to advance the rights of working people to economic and social justice.
Meet with local elected officials on a regular basis to educate regarding healthcare issues.
Budget local Political Director to oversee these programs.
Unite All Employees Who Do the Same Work
Devote at least 20% of the local budget to organizing other RNs and healthcare workers to strengthen our members’ bargaining power.
Hire local organizing staff.
Develop statewide RN and healthcare identity and network (HEAL) to build power.
Increase Resources to Build New Strength
Reform dues structure to provide equity in our workforce.
Increase revenues to meet components of Local Unity Plan and win wage, benefit and staffing improvements for our members.
Guarantee that every penny of the new dues money will be used to strengthen the Union.
