SEIU Local 1991 hosted a forum on
healthcare reform at Miami-Dade College Medical Center Campus where
nationally renowned doctors and nurses, including Jackson CEO and
President Dr. Eneida Roldan, shared stories and insights from the field
about the need for healthcare reform. The Oct. 28 forum was held in
partnership with MDC/JMH Scholar Nursing Program.
More
than 100 SEIU nurses and nursing students from MDC came to the event to
hear experts share about the ongoing fight for healthcare reform and
how the current system presents challenges to provide quality care to
patients nationwide.
The
keynote speaker was Celia Wcislo, Assistant Director of 1199 SEIU
Massachusetts Division and Board Member of the Commonwealth Insurance
Connector Board, who shared lessons learned from the Massachusetts
healthcare reform program.
Other panelists included Dr.
Olveen Carrasquillo, Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief of the
Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Miami’s
Miller School of Medicine and co-founder and Vice President of Latinos
for National Health Insurance; Dr. L. Toni Lewis, President of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR); Florida State Rep. Yolly Roberson,an advocate of healthcare reform at the state level;
Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger, ImmediatePast-President of the Dade County
Medical Association and Dr. David Woolsey,SEIU Local 1991 Trustee and
Attending ER Physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
