Interested in Joining SEIU Local 1991? Forming A Union Gives Us A Voice

Members can update their data by filling the sign up form with your Local 1991.

How can forming a union give us a voice? By joining together in a union, healthcare workers in Florida will have a variety of ways to have a voice in our future. If you are not yet represented by a Union at work, read about the important benefits of organizing below...

Access to information
Many of us have had to read the newspaper to find out what is happening in our own workplaces. Together as part of SEIU Local 1991, we'll be able to analyze information about our workplace's finances and determine what improvements can be made or what changes may be necessary. We can have more meaningful input in decisions if we're fully informed about our choices.

Contract negotiations
Once employees vote to form a union, we elect a bargaining committee of our co-workers. With assistance from experienced union negotiators, our committee will sit down with management to negotiate a union contract that covers issues like wages, benefits, job security, workload, safety, and other hospital policies and procedures. As members of the union, we'll vote on our priorities, decide how we can best achieve our goals, and approve our contract. With a written contract, management can't make changes without consulting with us and getting our agreement.

Union-management committees
Most union employees have input into workplace policies through special committees that work cooperatively with the administration to find ways to make improvements that benefit workers and clients.

Union stewards
Many members say that one of the biggest advantages to having a union is the ability to resolve everyday problems and issues on the job. Once we decide to form a union, we'll elect representatives from each department to serve as union stewards. Our stewards will make sure the contract is followed and help resolve problems wherever they arise.

Informal discussions and meetings
In workplaces where the employees have joined together in a union, staff members are always free to raise questions and concerns without fear of reprisals. That creates an environment in which employees and management are accustomed to working out problems. Employees and managers meet regularly to discuss issues and find solutions.

Grievance Procedures
Under a union contract, issues that can't be settled informally with our supervisors can be dealt with through a grievance procedure - a fair way to work out problems that gives a neutral third party, not the administration, the final say.
