Union Stands Up for Chemo Safety at JHS
SEIU
1991's fight to improve health and safety for our members who work with chemotherapy
drugs has resulted in an overhaul of equipment, procedures and facilities at Jackson. The National
Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an in-depth
investigation of chemotherapy processes at Jackson as a result of a grievance we filed.
The interim report made numerous recommendations that the union demanded Jackson make as quickly as
possible.
We
are happy to report that most, if not all of those improvements have been
implemented, or are in process. The union’s Health and Safety Committee worked
diligently to hold Jackson
accountable and on this project. Special thanks to Nurse Educator Keith Buener,
RN, and pharmacist Luis Soto for leading this effort to make Jackson safer as it relates to
antineoplastics.
